These were shot for my second project commissioned by Broadway for their ‘Voices of Experience’ report. It reports on how people who drink on the streets can make positive changes in their lives. I visited two of their London hostels and a recovery centre meeting many of their clients who were trying to do just that. It doesn’t get much better than this for me, getting paid to meet interesting characters and photograph them while listening to their incredible stories… And what stories!!
I met an ex-model who showed me his cuttings and told me stories of his film appearances, a woman who had just represented herself in court and managed to save her home and a guy who had been sleeping rough for 10 years and who had just graduated from his treatment programme with 6 months sober. They showed me their rooms and most meaningful belongings, told me about their families, their struggles and successes. It was both heartbreaking and uplifting. There’s something about people’s ability to keep going through adversity and to bounce back from it, which I find endlessly inspiring.
